The March of the Old Gods
The Winged Hussars
The Winged Hussars' history stretches back to the founding of Amarith, when Sir Egel and the Griffon Erebus and his clutch flew into battle against the Orcs besieging Amarith. Eventually, King Fergus Ravenswood made the Winged Hussars into a legitimate knightly order, with Sir Egel at its head. The Winged Hussars would eventually go on to prove themselves again, when the Dragons began to tighten their grip on the world. Their usefulness culminated in the Last Great Dragon Purge, when the Winged Hussars brought the fight to the dragons in the air, and felled many of them, while suffering relatively few casualties.
Today, the Winged Hussars patrol the skies of the Plains of Athenry, and keep the denizens of the plains safe, and inform the Lords of the Baronies and the King if the orcs appear to be massing. The Winged Hussars are occasionally called upon to quickly deliver important or sensitive correspondence to important figure, such as treaty terms, or calls for a diplomatic meeting of the races.
The Winged Hussars are proficient with lances and spears, as they require long reach to strike at enemies before the griffin can get to them. Winged Hussars also serve for life, as rearing a Griffin is a time consuming process, and they are oath bound to not only serve Amarith, but the griffins that the Winged Hussars ride are intelligent enough to speak, and rider and mount must swear an oath to serve one another for life, in addition to the Kingdom. The Winged Hussars are also expected to constantly be training with their companions or patrolling for threats. If a Winged Hussar is ever rendered unable to fight, due to age or severe wounds, the Winged Hussar is granted a small house outside of Amarith, along with a small pension to cover any expenses that are required to maintain a home and feed and clothe a family.
